Revising police precincts stirs opposition in ranks
Local businesses and officers are concerned about plans to revise local police precints. The revision would essentially split through the Short North. "Something happened right next door to us, but also several incidents happened on the other side of what would be the dividing line, and my concern is how does that get communicated between the north and the south Short North now?" says Surly Girl co-owner Carmen Owens. Artists, Musicians, and Small Businesses Team Up to Take Over Former Wonder Bread Factory
info@wonderlandcolumbus.com - It’s been almost a year since Wonder Bread moved out of their Italian Village bakery on 4th Street near the Short North.  Now, a group of innovative entrepreneurs are looking to turn the 65,000 square foot factory into a hub for the creative class in Columbus and beyond.

The project is being called “Wonderland” and it will combine artist studios, shared office space, band rehearsal and recording facilities, venue and performance space, gallery space, and a mix of start-up and established retail all under one roof.  The goal is to provide a resource for artists, musicians, and small businesses to achieve individual success, as well as to establish an icon in Columbus that highlights our outstanding local creative industries to the world.

Getting things off the ground are Adam Brouillette (Couchfire Collective), Andrew Dodson (Central City Recording), David Hunegnaw (The Sandbox Columbus), Kevin Lykens (Lykens Companies) and Josh Quinn (Tigertree).  The group is forming a non-profit organization to manage the property, to keep rent costs down and to provide a vehicle to seek donations and grants to encourage growth and job creation within the creative community.  They will each focus on a specific area – arts, music, business,  retail – and provide business counseling and information resources for tenants as well as day-to-day management of the property.

There will be an informational meeting on January 29th at Junctionview Studios (889 Williams Ave, Grandview Heights) from 6:30pm-9pm for anyone who may be interested.

DRAC Downtown Columbus Survey
The Downtown Residents’ Association of Columbus (DRAC) is partnering with Columbus real estate research specialists The Danter Company for an updated Internet survey measuring perceptions of Downtown Columbus. The survey asks respondents who live in the Columbus metro area about their perceptions about the advantages and disadvantages of Downtown living. Although current residents of Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods are the primary focus of the survey, non-Downtown residents are also encouraged to share their perceptions of Downtown.

The survey updates and expands a survey completed in 2006. Since 2006, there have been many changes affecting the quality of life in the Downtown area, including the closing and demolition of City Center Mall and the opening of Huntington Park. The survey is designed to identify how such changes, as well as the current economic and housing market climate, have impacted perceptions of Downtown Columbus as a place to live, and should take approximately 15 minutes to take.  The survey can be taken at http://bit.ly/DRACsurvey

SWACO & Columbus Offer Yard Waste Collections
SWACO will offer City of Columbus residents six (6) additional free Saturday yard waste collections beginning Saturday October 31st. The collections will continue on Saturdays through December 5th from 9am until 3pm.   The new sites are in addition to nine (9) other locations available now for Columbus and Franklin County residents.

SWACO suggests residents lessen their environmental footprint by home composting their yard waste.  Also, grass clippings are a good nutrient for lawns.  Residents are urged to “just mow it” and not bag their grass clippings.   More information on yard waste collections and composting is available by clicking on the “yard waste” button at www.swaco.org.
