Frequently Asked Questions

Personal Security:
IV Park Free WiFi has some built-in filters for blocking
adware and phishing sites. However, it does not provide
you with any form of firewall, privacy or anti-virus
protection. With any free WiFi service, there’s a balance
between security and usability.

• If your laptop has a personal firewall make sure
it is turned on.

• If you use virus protection software, make sure it is up to date.

• If you have file sharing enable, you should disable it when using our wifi service.

• Disable WiFi Ad-hoc Mode before using our free WiFi service, or you might accidentally log on to an unknown network you do not want to access or allow it to gain access to your laptop

Be aware of the fact that almost anything that you type or any info that appears on your screen while you're using an open wifi network can be seen by others nearby (should they care to look). You might want to limit email and IM to casual communication.

If you are accessing a page that requires a login and password, or if you are entering any personal data (credit card, SSN, etc) make sure that you are on a secure website. That's easy enough -- just check that the web address begins with https instead of the usual http -- and your information will be safely encrypted before transmission. As long as you're on a page with an address that begins with https, the data you send and receive is protected from sniffers and snoopers.

Internet:
If you don’t know how to connect to the internet using a free wifi service, please see the Beginner’s Guide.

Email:
You can download and read your email using your choice of desktop email clients (Outlook, Entourage, Netscape, AOL, Apple Mail, Eudora, etc) However, you can not send email while using the IV Park Free WiFi service. For both sending and receiving email, you will need to use webmail.  If you don’t know how to use webmail, see the Beginner’s Guide. Be on your guard, some web-based email providers have a secure login page, but after you're logged in the access reverts to normal non-encrypted mode. So any email you send or receive while on a wireless connection is out in the clear. As long as you're on a page with an address that begins with https, the data you send and receive is protected from sniffers and snoopers.

Virtual Private Networks:
VPN connections to your home or office will probably not work through the IV Park Free
WiFi Service. This includes anonymous surfing VPN software like iPIG and Hotspot Shield.
